Car Engine Remapping Guide

July 30, 2021 By Gauge Magazine

Engine Remapping Car lovers are always thinking about how to improve their cars. Some start saving up for car performance parts as soon as they purchase their first car. Check https://www.cooksport.co.uk/  for superior car performance parts such as intercooler, manifold, intake, and exhaust among others. However, you will need to have your ECU remapped to make these new parts compatible with your car. Now let’s look at ECU remapping and what’s all about.

What’s Engine Remapping?

Car remapping aims at unleashing car potential that has been limited for various reasons by the manufacturers. Present-day cars come with an Engine Control Unit-this is software that controls how the engine operates. The software is alternatively referred to as the map. ECU works by receiving input from processes and sensors and then releases output. Engine remapping entails extracting more power from the engine and modifying the ECU to enhance car reliability, drivability, and fuel efficiency.

Can I Gain Extra Power through Remapping?

Remapping can help boost engine power. However, there is no set limit on the amount of power you can gain through remapping. In fact, some engines can gain more power over others. For example, the latest car models are turbocharged since companies are producing smaller engines.

Unfortunately, most car owners dislike turbocharged cars since they have a lower rpm redline not to mention that their power delivery isn’t so good.  But if you are into the idea of having your car remapped, turbocharged cars are the best.

Unless you fix auto performance parts to an aspirated vehicle, your car may not attain much power through remapping. But a turbocharged car can gain 25% more power through the Stage 1 ECU tune.

The Impact of Remapping on Fuel-Efficiency

If what you want is more power that means that fuel efficiency will only reduce after remapping. In this case, your combustion engine converts energy in the fuel into power. So, if you want your vehicle to operate at peak power, more fuel will be needed.

However, you may find a tuning company that provides maps that enhance fuel efficiency. But in most cases, such fuel-efficiency remaps cannot offer peak power. Also, some tuning companies provide switchable maps.

What’s the Cost for Engine Remapping?

There is no fixed cost for engine remapping. The cost differs from one company to the other. And these companies set the pricing depending on the car model and their driver’s remapping goals. However, the stage one Engine Control Unit remapping costs around $300 to $800. With an experienced tuner, any amount you spend on car remapping is worth it. That’s because skilled tuners take their time to extract more power from a car’s engine and concurrently keep the vehicle reliable. Aside from boosting power, other things your tuner will check include city drivability, power delivery, part throttle cruising, and throttle response, and more.

Can I Remap my Car Alone?

Maybe the last time you took your car to a tuner, you realized that it only took a few minutes or hours to remap your car. In the process, you mastered a few tricks that you wish to give a trial. Should you go ahead or not? The answer is no!

As simple as it may look, car remapping requires professional intervention because it involves a lot of things such as creating a map and uploading the map. Without the right skills, you might make mistakes that could cost your car or life on the road. A skilled tuner will do things the right way and spare you the stress.
