Common Neck Injuries From Car Accidents

May 30, 2023 By Gauge Magazine

neck injuriesHave you personally experienced a car accident before? If so, you understand it can be a scary and painful experience. But one of the biggest concerns after an accident – besides making sure everyone is ok – is assessing any injuries that resulted from the incident. Different damages may not be immediately clear until several hours or even days following the crash, and neck pain is a common consequence of such incidents.

Moreover, if the accident was due to someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled in making a neck injury compensation claim. Therefore, you should consider seeking medical attention as soon as possible, as this will help diagnose any hidden damages and provide proof of injuries. So, let’s look at some common neck injury types that arise due to road collisions.

Whiplash

Have you ever had your head jolted forward or backward suddenly, leaving your neck feeling stiff and achy afterwards? That’s the infamous whiplash for you. This can occur when your head is forcefully moved in either direction, exerting strain on your neck muscles and ligaments. Don’t dismiss it; whiplash can cause minor to severe symptoms such as neck discomfort, stiffness, headaches, and dizziness. Thankfully, over-the-counter medicines and ice packs may relieve most cases. But don’t push your luck. Whiplash can cause persistent pain and impairment, so seek medical service if you suspect you have it.

Herniated Discs

Herniated discs can be debilitating neck injuries caused by car accidents. Discs are the pillows between the vertebrae in your spine; when injured, they can cause severe discomfort. When a disc is herniated, it indicates that some of the jelly-like material inside has leaked into the spinal canal. This can cause nerve injury, resulting in pain and suffering. Herniated disc symptoms include neck pain that spreads into the shoulders and arms and numbness and tingling in these areas. Treatment for a herniated disc may involve physical therapy or surgery.

Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury can have long-term and tragic implications. This injury occurs when the spine is hit or twisted in an accident. It can affect mobility, sensation, breathing, and other vital bodily functions. This causes loss of mobility, feeling, and/or the capacity to control bladder or bowel function. Depending on how bad it is, spinal cord damage may need surgery. Rehabilitation can also assist the patient in adjusting to life with this type of injury and regaining mobility. So, it is important to seek medical services immediately if a car accident leads to spinal cord-related issues.

Fractured Vertebrae

A fractured vertebra can be a very painful and frightening event. It’s not like a broken arm or sprained ankle – we’re talking about your spine. Symptoms like difficulty moving or numbness in your extremities can make the already uncomfortable situation much more distressing. And unfortunately, surgery is often the only option for healing properly. The good news is that numerous people recover completely from a fractured spine with the correct treatment. So, if you have this illness, don’t give up hope – there is hope for a pain-free future.

Dislocated Joints

Dislocated joints are common neck injuries that often occur after a car accident. When the power of an impact is too strong, one or more joints in the neck may move out of their usual position. This can cause the person to experience extreme pain. If not addressed, the joint may become locked in its misaligned position. Dislocated joints should be treated as quickly as feasible by a medical specialist to regain their normal range of motion. In some circumstances, physical treatment or surgery may be required.

Muscle Strains

Muscle strains are among the most prevalent types of neck injuries in car accidents. The neck contains a system of muscles and ligaments that can be strained or even torn when an individual is involved in a crash. A muscle strain may cause sharp pain, tenderness to the touch, stiffness, headaches and fatigue. Getting medical assistance right away is vital because these symptoms can worsen. Depending on how bad the harm is, you could get physical therapy, a massage, stretching routines, or even care from a chiropractor.

Conclusions

Neck injuries are among the most typical physical trauma vehicle accident victims suffer. They can vary from minor sprains and strains to severe whiplash, disc herniations, and other serious spinal cord damage. It is important to get medical awareness when experiencing pain or discomfort, regardless of the accident’s severity. Prompt treatment may help prevent further damage and speed up the healing process. With the right medical care and rehabilitation, most neck injuries can fully recover with time. Take care!
