Want to Own a Boat? Here’s What You Need to Know

October 18, 2023 By Gauge Magazine

own a boatTo Own a boat might appeal to you. Maybe you like getting out on the water. You see boats in the marina or parked in someone’s driveway, and you may look at them wistfully.

There are Mastercraft boats and other kinds available at reasonable prices, but before you take the plunge, you should consider pros and cons that go along with boat ownership. We’ll discuss a few of those right now.

How Much Does a Boat Cost?

The first thing worth considering about boats is how much they cost. If you don’t have very much disposable income at the moment, then it’s obviously not realistic to look into getting one.

The good news is that you can get some boats relatively cheaply. You can usually buy smaller, less fancy boats for about $15K.

There are ones that get much more expensive than that, though. You can get one for as much as $75K and still be talking about an average-sized vessel. You can also get ones that cost $100K or more.

The Pros of Owning a Boat

The pros of owning one are many. Some people like them for the same reasons they might get a motorcycle.

These are vehicles, but they also represent freedom. If you own a boat, you can take it out on the water any time you like. When you do that, you’re leaving your cares behind for a while.

You can teach your kids how to pilot the boat and how to fish. You can play some music while out on your boat and have some tasty beverages. You can slather on some sunscreen and lie out on the deck. By the time you get home later in the day, you may feel much more relaxed and less stressed.

Some Possible Cons

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention some possible cons of owning a boat, though. For many people, one of the biggest reasons not to get one is the continuous expense of owning one.

Let’s say you buy a less expensive boat for $15K. That’s only the initial expenditure, though. You will also need to spend money to maintain the boat. Boat parts wear out, just like car parts do. You will need to have cash on hand to maintain your boat, or else it will not be safe to continue operating it.

Then, there’s the issue of where you will keep it. If you want to keep your boat in a marina, you must pay fees to do that. If you want to keep your boat at your home instead, it will take up space in your driveway or garage. That may be space where you would typically park your car, so now you need to figure out something else to do with that.

Boating is definitely not for everyone, and neither is ownership. If you love the water, though, you might feel that the pros outweigh the cons, and owning a boat will add something to your life that’s lacking.  If all else fails you can always own a custom car, check them out in our custom car photo gallery.
