If you’re a true automobile enthusiast, you know that every vehicle has a story to tell. This month, we bring you the captivating tale of a unique creation that has been turning heads and sparking conversations wherever it goes. Meet the 1987 Mazda B2200, affectionately dubbed “Mutt,” a stunning amalgamation of automotive ingenuity and artistic flair.
At the heart of “Mutt” is its owner, Craig Snyder, a devoted aficionado of mini trucks and customized rides for over three decades. The inspiration for this one-of-a-kind masterpiece struck Craig during his first Camp n Drag experience in 2018. The thrill of drag racing, camaraderie among friends, and the captivating world of customization ignited a passion that led to the creation of “Mutt.”
The name “Mutt” perfectly encapsulates the essence of this vehicle. Its DNA comprises a 350 V8 engine borrowed from a ’75 Camaro, a Toyota 4Runner front bumper, and the independent rear suspension of a Mazda RX7. The fusion of these distinct components not only creates a harmonious visual appeal but also delivers an unparalleled driving experience.
At its core, “Mutt” is a 1987 Mazda B2200, originally manufactured in a bygone era. With an initial cost of $2,500, this vintage canvas provided the perfect foundation for Craig’s creative vision. However, the journey from a basic Mazda to the stunning “Mutt” we see today was no simple task.
Building “Mutt” took six months of dedicated effort, transforming it from a vintage relic to a roadworthy masterpiece. The transition from hydraulics to air ride suspension was a pivotal moment, enhancing both the aesthetics and the ride quality. Additional refinements, such as new front fenders, reinforced chassis, and a fresh coat of paint, turned “Mutt” into a true head-turner.
For Craig Snyder, the journey of automotive customization spans more than three decades. A proud member of the “Dropped Elevations” club, he has carved his niche in the realm of custom rides. “Mutt” is a testament to his passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the art of automotive transformation.
As Craig’s journey continues, he has his sights set on a new project, a 1991 Isuzu Space Cab, an early 50th birthday gift from his wife. This iconic ride will serve as a fresh canvas for his creative expression, with plans to elevate it to new heights over the next few years.
Behind every successful project, there are individuals who provide unwavering support and expertise. Craig extends his heartfelt gratitude to his wife, Angie Snyder, for her constant encouragement and assistance. Special thanks are also reserved for Jeremiah Sibray of Addictive Fabworks, whose craftsmanship and dedication were instrumental in transforming “Mutt” into a safe and roadworthy masterpiece.
As a seasoned enthusiast, Craig Snyder’s journey has been marked by a collection of remarkable rides. These include a pair of Isuzu standard cabs, a 1990 and a 1994 model, both static dropped, as well as a 2013 Ford Fusion on air ride. These rides, along with countless others, reflect Craig’s unwavering dedication to the art of automotive customization.
Nestled within “Mutt” is a powerful heart – a 350 V8 engine sourced from a 1975 Chevy Camaro. The eight cylinders of pure power deliver an unforgettable driving experience, while a touch of black and polished chrome adds a touch of elegance under the hood.
The chassis of “Mutt” is a work of engineering brilliance. A custom rear frame cradles the Mazda RX7 independent rear suspension, and a tubular core support adds a touch of finesse. The result is a chassis that not only complements the vehicle’s aesthetics but also guarantees a smooth and comfortable ride.
Rolling on KMC Tramps, “Mutt” flaunts 20″×8.5″ wheels that exude an air of sophistication and power. These wheels, combined with 245/35/20 tires, complete the picture of a vehicle that effortlessly marries style and performance.
The captivating exterior of “Mutt” is adorned with DuPont Cloisonne Blue paint that gleams in the sunlight. Every curve and contour is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship and artistic sensibilities that went into the vehicle’s creation.
Stepping into “Mutt” reveals a world of customized interior excellence. A custom-built console, Honda Civic bucket seats with shaved headrests, and an Old School Phoenix Gold amplifier are just a few of the elements that contribute to an immersive driving experience.
“Mutt” isn’t just a vehicle; it’s a labor of love, a testament to creativity, and a symbol of automotive passion. From its unique blend of components to its stunning visual appeal, every facet of “Mutt” tells a story of dedication, inspiration, and innovation. As Craig Snyder’s journey continues, we eagerly anticipate the next chapter in the legacy of automotive customization.
