Becoming a driver isn’t just about being able to navigate the roads safely and nailing that turn in the road — there’s also the theoretical side to driving. Your theory exam will test your knowledge of road signs, safety information, your alertness and much more.
So, it’s vital that you revise, to give yourself the best chance of passing first time. Just like your practical test, you’ll have to pay each time that you retake the test, so here’s some revision tips to help you to ace your driving theory exam.
Grab a handbook
Your theory test will contain 50 multiple choice questions and you’ll need to score at least 43 in order to pass. All of the answers to the questions that could arise in this section of your exam can be found in the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) theory test handbook. This resource is an essential revision tool, as it also contains some helpful tips and practice questions to prepare you for your exam.
Hazard perception practice
The second section of the theory exam is the hazard perception test. This will test your ability to recognise specific driving hazards that appear, through an interactive video. Of course, this is something that you should naturally do in your practical lessons, if you’re learning to drive with one of the driving schools in the West Midlands or across the country. However, you shouldn’t just rely on driving experience alone, since this probably isn’t sufficient enough to enable you to pass this section.
Thankfully, you can also practice online, since there are a range of hazard perception videos readily available for you to try your hand at. The actual test takes place on a computer and you’ll be required to click on the screen each time you spot a hazard. This assessment is sensitive and will penalise you if you click too frequently, so to avoid this, you’ll want to practice at home prior to your test.
Alternatively, you could download a practice app on your phone and test yourself on the go, wherever you are! By having a go before the real thing, you’ll be more confident and more likely to excel in this section on the day.
Do a mock theory test
In your school exams, you probably completed practice papers prior to the day, to help see if you were ready for the real thing. Thankfully, you can do the same for your theory test and you’ll find plenty of mock tests online that will run you through the multiple-choice section, to test your knowledge.
The beauty of this is that you can decide whether you’re sufficiently prepared for your exam and act accordingly. You can reschedule your theory test up to three days before your selected date, which means that if you don’t think you’ll pass, you can save your money and book a later date.
We’re sure you want to feel the wind in your hair, take to the open road and seize your freedom. In order to do that, you’re going to need to pass both your theory test and your practical examination, and this is going to require revision and practice! Since it’s your money on the line when you book your theory test, you’ll want to revise thoroughly to give yourself the best chance of success. So don’t leave it until the last minute, get ahead now!
