Safety on a Motorcycle

November 24, 2020 By Gauge Magazine

Safety on a Motorcycle

When you are riding on your motorcycle, you need to make sure that your safety, and that of other road users, is constantly at the forefront of any decisions you make. This includes planning and decisions you make prior to getting on your bike. Due to being so much more exposed on a bike than you are in more standard modes of transport, you are more vulnerable than other road users, such as those in cars, vans, or lorries. While you would hope that they would make safe choices on the road, you can never guarantee the actions of others, so will need to do your utmost to increase your own safety.

Visible Clothing

Safety on a Motorcycle you should be wearing suitably protective clothing when riding your motorcycle, you also want to make sure that you are seen. Being smaller than other road users means that you need to increase your visibility. All too often motorcycle users end up seeking information from a motorcycle accident lawyer because they were not easily seen while on the road, resulting in an accident. You can potentially avoid accidents simply by adding reflective or high visibility safety items to your motorcycle wardrobe. Even adding a high visibility shirt over your riding gear, or reflective stickers to your helmet could make a lot of difference. This can allow light from other vehicles to reflect off of you, and give other road users more time to act safely and avoid incidents.

Helmet

Wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle may be a legal requirement, depending on the state you live in. Whether or not you need to do this by law, it is undeniable that helmets can help prevent a lot of damage, and even death. This can be used to protect not only your head, but your neck as well, preventing injuries such as broken necks, damaged skulls, and even fractured jaws. You may still end up with a mild concussion, but that is a lot more favorable than losing your life or requiring extensive surgery.  A helmet is an important part of Safety on a Motorcycle.

Watch Your Speed

Keeping your speed down can prevent a lot of accidents and is one of the most important parts of Safety on a Motorcycle. You may also find that in wet, slippery, or icy weather, that your motorcycle is less stable and prone to sliding. By having a consistent, lower speed, you will be in more control, and able to turn without veering off course. Slowing down also gives other road users more of a chance to see you and alter their own driving accordingly to keep everyone safe. Considering that driving above the speed limit is the main cause of fatalities in car accidents in the US, it is definitely worth lengthening your journey by decreasing your speed, especially if it potentially saves your life.

Riding a custom motorcycle does not mean that you will definitely be injured or killed while on the road. It simply means you need to take extra care to keep yourself safe. Making better choices both regarding your vehicle and outfit, as well as the manner in which you ride, can make a great deal of difference to your wellbeing.
