What Not to Do if You Lock Your Keys in Your Car

January 26, 2021 By Gauge Magazine

Lock Your Keys in Your Car

When you lock your keys in your car, it can be a stressful situation. Whether you are at the side of the road in rural Ontario, or parked on a busy street in Toronto, it can be hard to know what to do first. This is especially true if you have somewhere to be, you don’t have a spare set or there is a child or pet in the car.

Unfortunately, many people simply do not know what to do first when this happens, and begin to panic. While knowing what to do is important, it is also important to know what you shouldn’t do. In an effort to help you out, we’ve put together a handy list you should make sure not to do if you lock your keys in your car.

Don’t Attempt to Handle Everything on Your OwnLock Your Keys in Your Car

When faced with this situation, some people will try and handle everything, without asking for help. Sure, it may be embarrassing to admit you have locked your keys in your car, but it is always the right move to call for help. Getting assistance can help you get back on the road sooner, and also help you stay in a good mental state.

If you have a spare key anywhere, your first call should be to a friend or family member who either has it, or can get it for you. If there is no spare key, your first call should be to a locksmith toronto. Locksmiths are able to help you safely and affordably gain entry to your vehicle. While many have only certain hours of availability, some are available 24/7 and can help you no matter when you have locked your keys in your car.

Don’t Try and Break Into Your Car

Another thing you should avoid doing when you lock your keys in your car is to try and break into your own car. This might be the first thing you think of, but it is often a mistake. Not only could you do a lot of (potentially expensive) damage to the car, but you could also hurt yourself or any pets inside. It is best to wait for the experts to arrive before you try to gain entry to your car by yourself.

In rare instances, however, it can be done. While breaking into your own car isn’t recommended, there are ways to do it safely if you truly do need to gain access immediately. For example, when it comes to breaking your car window, be sure to do it away from pets and children, and try to work around the outside of the window, rather than in the middle. Also, the side windows will be easier to gain access than trying to break the windshield.

Don’t Have a Panic Attack

As mentioned, locking your keys inside of your car can be quite stressful. However, if this happens to you, you need to do your best to avoid panicking. High stress levels can prevent you from thinking clearly, and can cloud your judgement. This could lead you to make a poor decision and do something that you will regret later.

Once you realize you have locked your keys in your car, it is important to stay calm. Take some deep breaths and start the process of reaching out to friends, family or a locksmith for assistance. Make sure you are off of the road, and sitting somewhere safely out of harm’s way.

Getting Back on The Road

Locking your keys in your car can be a stressful experience, but is certainly one you can deal with. As long as you avoid handling everything on your own, panicking or breaking into your car, you should be able to overcome this issue with no major issues.
