Why Are Trucks More Accident-Prone?

July 21, 2021 By Gauge Magazine

Being involved in a vehicle crash is among the most tragic situations that anyone can go through. Getting into a truck accident is especially terrifying; the impact that the truck’s huge size can result in is too dangerous. Unfortunately, truck accidents are very common. Around 500,000 trucking accidents, nearly 5,000 of which result in deaths, happen every year in the United States alone. Some accidents that result from a loss of contact or imbalance can be hard to predict, which makes it even harder to take the necessary precautions. Because trucks have a high center of gravity, they tend to lean to the side with every turn or curve. With the additional load of whatever the truck is carrying, rollovers, which are essentially the worst trucking accidents that anyone can get into, can easily occur. Read through our article to find out why trucks are more accident-prone and what to do if an accident occurs.

Common Accident Causes

As a truck driver, you need to be very conscious about your speed, your truck’s size and height, and the load of the items that you’re carrying. Otherwise, you can be putting yourself and those around you at great risk. When approaching turns or curves on the road, try to slow down and keep an eye out for the general conditions of the road. Rollover crashes usually result from speed, most commonly on highway exits and entrances. You also need to be overly alert and in control of your grip and stability over the steering wheel; any sudden changes or movements can cause your truck to lean over and fall. This is why you need to anticipate other driver’s actions and look out for cars or other vehicles miles before they approach you. Avoid oversteering as this can cause a spike in the lateral force. This means that you should steer clear of sandy or unpaved roadways that may cause you to resort to greater steering movements. If you drive a commercial truck, always make sure that your cargo is properly loaded and secured; shifting load will create imbalance and instability, which may cause your truck to tip over. Drive mindfully and carefully, and account for unfavorable weather conditions. Put all distractions away, whether it’s your cellphone or a water bottle that you may reach out for.

Legal Consultation

If the accident was a result of another party’s negligence in San Antonio, you need to receive adequate compensation. Being a victim of a truck accident is not an easy experience, which is why you need a lawyer who can help defend your case and protect your rights. They can help you receive sufficient compensation for your injuries and help you deal with this stressful time. They will also offer you guidance and advice on how to deal with your insurance adjuster to receive the best possible outcome. When you seek professional legal help, you will have the time to focus on recovering from your injuries and getting your life back on track.

Stop and Report

If you get into a trucking accident, the first thing that you should do is stay where you are and call the police. If you can, stay on one side of the road so you don’t cause traffic or additional crashes. If another party is involved, make sure that they stay at the crash scene, as well. You can collect their driver’s license plate number and the truck model just in case they leave. When the police arrive, make sure to give them a complete statement, sparing no detail. It’s your word against theirs; any vague information or minor inaccuracies can cost you a lot.

Seek Medical Help

The chances are that a paramedic team will come along with the police to the accident scene. Make sure to get checked and mention all your symptoms, even if they seem minor. If you are hurt, their aid can serve as a temporary relief until you get to the emergency room. When you go to the hospital, have a thorough check-up as many severe injuries can be disguised as regular post-accident symptoms. Keep all medical bills, reports, scans, and lab results, as they can help your case.

Trucking accidents are becoming more and more common each day, resulting in an increasing number of devastating injuries and deaths. Living through this situation can feel extremely unfair and overwhelming, especially when the accident was a result of another person’s negligence. Fortunately, there are some steps that you can take to help alleviate the stress. Seeking professional medical and legal help can offer you great support during this painful period.
