Dealing with Windshield Scratches: What You Need to Know

May 6, 2024 By Gauge Magazine

Windshield ScratchesYour vehicle’s windshield is designed to protect you from flying debris such as rocks, harsh weather conditions, and ejection in case of a rollover accident. Many windshields are also equipped with UV protection, shielding you from harmful ultraviolet rays. In this article we will go over Dealing with Windshield Scratches.

Most car windshields today are made from laminated glass, which consists of two layers of glass sandwiched around a layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) resin.  This design prevents shattering upon impact and enhances safety.

When laminated auto glass gets damaged, it not only affects visibility but it can also compromise the structural integrity of your vehicle, affecting the safety of both the driver and the passengers.

This is why repairing a scratched windshield is important, as it not only ensures your safety but can also prevent further damage, which can help you save money on costly windshield replacements in the long run.

Here are some helpful tips to fix scratches on your windshield from car window technicians:

Determine How You Got the Scratch

Determining how your windshield got scratched is vital in preventing similar issues in the future. Understanding whether the scratches are due to environmental factors or mechanical causes helps you choose the best care and maintenance strategies.

Here are some of the most common causes of windshield scratches and how you can prevent them:

  • Road Debris: Small stones or debris thrown up by other vehicles can scratch your windshield. To prevent this, maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, especially on highways or in construction zones.
  • Improper Cleaning Tools: Using abrasive cloths or dirty sponges can cause scratches. Always use a clean microfiber towel and a cleaner designed for automotive glass.
  • Worn Wiper Blades: Old or damaged wiper blades can scratch the glass. Check your wiper blades regularly for signs of wear and replace them as needed to keep your windshield clear and scratch-free.
  • Ice Scrapers: Using metal ice scrapers or improper techniques can scratch your windshield. Opt for a plastic scraper and gently remove ice and snow without applying excessive pressure.
  • Automatic Car Washes: Some car washes use brushes that can be too harsh on your windshield. To prevent scratches, choose car washes that use soft cloth brushes or go for touchless options.

How To Remove Scratches From Windshield

Providing immediate attention to your damaged windshield is crucial to prevent further damage. Small chips can quickly turn into large cracks if not treated promptly, potentially leading to the need for a full replacement.

In case you don’t have time to schedule a repair with an auto glass shop yet, you can opt for a DIY repair in the meantime. Here are some ways to fix scratches on your windshield:

Apply Nail Polish

Surprisingly, nail polish can be an effective temporary solution in fixing small chips in your windshield as it acts as a sealant that fills the cracks and prevents them from spreading further. This quick fix can buy you some time until you can get a professional repair.

Before applying the nail polish in the crack, make sure to thoroughly clean your windshield to remove any dirt, debris, or residues from the surface. It’s important that the area around the chip is completely clean to ensure that the nail polish adheres well and forms a good seal.

If the chip is deeper, you might need to apply additional layers of nail polish. Allow each layer to dry completely before applying the next to ensure each layer can properly form a seal.

Allow the nail polish to dry completely. The drying time can vary depending on the brand and environmental conditions, but generally, it should take about an hour to set properly. Avoid driving the car or touching the repair area during this time.

Buy A Glass Repair Kit

Windshield repair kits are often readily available in most auto parts stores, providing a convenient way for drivers to manage minor damages themselves. These kits come with all the necessary tools and instructions, making DIY repairs easy and simple.

The resin included in these kits is designed to fill small imperfections in the glass, which, when cured, forms a bond that restores the glass’s strength and prevents the damage from spreading. For small cracks, the resin can often make the crack nearly invisible, while medium-sized cracks may still be slightly visible but stabilized after repair.

Use Super Glue

Super glue is another easy temporary fix for smaller cracks or chips. However, it may not be as effective for other types of windshield cracks.

The glue fills the crack and can prevent moisture or dirt from entering, which can cause the crack to expand due to temperature fluctuations and vibrations from driving.

After thoroughly cleaning your windshield, carefully apply a small amount of super glue directly into the chip or crack. It’s important to control the flow of glue to avoid over-application, which can spread beyond the damaged area and affect visibility.

Apply An Acrylic Scratch Remover

Acrylic scratch removers are specially formulated to repair light scratches on acrylic and glass surfaces. They chemically bond with the material to fill the scratch, making them less noticeable and helping to protect the surface from further damage.

Simply apply a small quantity directly onto the scratch, rubbing it gently with a cloth for around a minute, allowing it to dry for thirty minutes, and then wiping it clean with a soft cloth.

Go to Auto Glass Experts

Once you’ve managed to free up some time, it’s important to contact local auto glass experts in your area to schedule a repair. Although DIY repairs can manage to make your windshields look better temporarily, professional services ensure a more durable fix and proper alignment with safety standards.

Additionally, professionals use high-quality materials and advanced techniques that provide a more durable and visually appealing repair compared to most DIY solutions. This can extend the life of the windshield and prevent future damage.

Ultimately, while DIY kits can patch up minor chips and cracks, consulting a professional is crucial for ensuring that the repair is done correctly and safely, thereby maintaining the vehicle’s structural integrity and the driver’s safety.
