The 2026 show season kicks off in a major way as Meguiar’s brings the 2025 Ridler Award-winning 1955 Chevy Nomad “Gray Madder” to its booth at the legendary Detroit Autorama. The 73rd annual event runs February 27–March 1 inside Huntington Place (formerly Cobo Convention Center) in Detroit, and this year’s Meguiar’s display is one enthusiasts won’t want to miss.
As part of its 125th Anniversary Celebration Tour, Meguiar’s will showcase Tom Bresnahan’s stunning ’55 Nomad — built by Southern Comfort Customs & Interior — under the awning of its big rig display. The team will also unveil and demonstrate products from its extensive 2026 car care lineup, helping owners preserve, protect, and perfect their builds.
A Ridler Award-Winning Masterpiece
Often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Hot Rodding,” the Don Ridler Memorial Award has been presented since 1964 to the best new vehicle debuting at Detroit Autorama. Sponsored by Meguiar’s, the award honors exceptional creativity, innovation, and craftsmanship in custom car building.
Tom Bresnahan had always considered the Ridler the ultimate achievement in the automotive world. What started as a simple restoration project quickly transformed into a full-blown Ridler contender — and ultimately, a winning build.
The journey began with an online listing. The 1955 Chevy Nomad had been abandoned mid-restoration, stripped down to little more than a rust-free shell. That blank canvas became the foundation for something extraordinary.

Engineering the Ultimate 1955 Chevy Nomad
Originally intended as a clean driver with subtle modifications, the project escalated into a radical reimagination of Chevrolet’s iconic two-door wagon.
Key modifications include:
-
Art Morrison chassis conversion into a unibody platform
-
Extensive body reshaping — stretched, shortened, molded panels
-
Only a 3-foot center roof section remains from the original body
-
Lowered roofline creating the illusion of a chopped top (while maintaining factory headroom)
-
Custom “clamshell” front-end with integrated bumpers
-
Quarter panels repositioned 3 inches rearward to eliminate the “snubby” Nomad nose
-
Relocated doors and A- and B-pillars for proper proportions
Every detail of “Gray Madder” reflects obsessive craftsmanship. The custom wheel design — inspired by classic OEM hubcaps — became a repeating design theme throughout the car. From speaker grilles to control knobs, steering wheel center, fan covers, and even machined bolt heads, circular motifs tie the entire build together in cohesive artistry.

Power Meets Precision: LS3 Performance
Under the hood sits a fully built LS3 engine paired with a GM 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission. The engine bay is meticulously detailed:
-
Paint-matched block coordinated with interior tones
-
Hidden wiring, plumbing, and hardware
-
Nomad valve cover lettering and even tire sidewalls color-matched
-
Engine compartment presentation worthy of its Ridler status
Inside, rich dark red leather contrasts brilliantly with polished chrome accents, delivering timeless elegance with modern execution. The build consumed nearly ten years of craftsmanship — a testament to dedication and perseverance.
The Meaning Behind “Gray Madder”
The project endured real-life challenges when both Tom and his wife Christy were diagnosed with cancer during the build. Thankfully, both successfully completed treatment, allowing the project to continue.
The name “Gray Madder” came after Tom joked, “I’ve been thinking so hard my gray matter hurts!” A playful twist on words became the identity of one of the most celebrated custom cars of 2025.
Their perseverance paid off with a Ridler Award win on their very first attempt — an achievement few builders ever accomplish.
