What Is a Side-by-Side ATV?

April 23, 2021 By Gauge Magazine

If you are new to the world of powersports and the thought of purchasing a small vehicle has crossed your mind more than a few times, alongside the term ATV, you might have probably come upon the term UTV or Side-by-side are an excellent choice for those who value comfort and safety and are looking for a reliable companion adept at performing a variety of tasks.. Both types of these vehicles have a similar exterior look, especially if the models are manufactured by the same company. Besides, they can be used for similar purposes, which makes the process of choosing the best option a complicated task. However, there is a great deal of difference between the two. If you are interested in learning more about the distinctive characteristics of UTVs, we encourage you to keep on reading this article.

What is implied by the term UTV?side-by-side

To put it simply, the abbreviation UTV stands for utility task vehicle, which also goes by the name of side-by-side, or SxS. As the name suggests, UTVs can handle a multitude of heavy-duty tasks, including towing, hauling a heavy payload, snow plowing, serious off-roading, and anything else that comes to mind. Even if you mean to use your vehicle mainly for recreational purposes, utility vehicles will live up to your expectations and deliver as much fun as ATVs do. Now let’s get down to some specific characteristics which make UTVs so much different from other quads.

The steering system

side-by-side

Unlike ATVs that require an operator to use a handlebar to control the direction of the quad, UTVs are steered via a steering wheel. As far as breaking and acceleration are concerned, an absolute majority of UTVs come with foot pedals. Speaking of ATVs, most stock models come with a thumb throttle, which allows an operator to control acceleration. Braking is controlled by using either the foot pedal or the brake handle, depending on the model you operate.

UTVs are way more convenient for people who are used to driving a car. Unlike ATVs, they do not require a steep learning curve to get the hang of how the whole thing works.

Side-by-Side Passenger capacity

UTV

UTVs are ideal for people who are not used to going on adventures all on their own. There are many options available on the market that are built to carry up to six passengers at a time. But normally, their passenger capacity ranges from two to four seats. Alternatively, ATVs can carry a maximum of two people at a time, including an operator.

Storage space

UTV

Side-by-sides are capable of carrying a heavier payload than ATVs. They are a popular choice for transporting supplies and heavy equipment in a broad range of industries. Should the need arise for more space, you can enhance the performance of your vehicle by installing a UTV storage box.

Side-by-Side Safety issues

side-by-side

Utility quads are designed in such a way that they can provide a lot more safety features than ATVs do. Thus, they usually come with roll bars, which create a cage-like structure around the driver and passengers. All the seats also have seat belts. On top of that, you can always upgrade your vehicle by installing a fully enclosed cabin, windshields, and a whole range of other accessories, including a CFMoto rear cargo box to store all the gear you might need at hand.

Side-by-side are an excellent choice for those who value comfort and safety and are looking for a reliable companion adept at performing a variety of tasks.
