What to consider when buying a luxury car

December 21, 2023 By Gauge Magazine

luxury carGot your eyes on a dream Porsche, Ferrari, Rolls Royce or another Luxury Car? There are so many spectacular cars out there, but many people keep coming back to their favourites time and time again. If you’re thinking of biting the bullet, here’s what you should consider before buying your new vehicle.

Upfront cost

There’s obviously a cost to luxury, and you’re probably capable of affording it. But certain cars go above this threshold and may leave you needing financial support or a little boost to get the keys. If you need that extra bit of budget, secured loans may be an option to bridge the gap.

Don’t forget there are also leasing and contract hire options if you want to avoid taking on such a big financial burden, but there’s nothing like the feeling of owning your dream car.

Ongoing costs

Once you’ve made the purchase, it’s important to consider the ongoing costs associated with luxury car ownership. This typically includes insurance, maintenance, fuel and repairs – all of which tend to cost more with more expensive vehicles.

If you’re able to afford such a vehicle in the first place, you probably don’t have to worry about these additional expenses, but it’s always good to keep in mind when you’re selecting one.

New vs used

There’s a significant question to be asked about buying your dream car new or used. Both options have their pros and cons – for example, buying new means you have a factory-fresh vehicle essentially built for you and no one else, but you also have to contend with significant depreciation as soon as you buy it.

Used cars can come with more character and a story which you’re able to add to, but you may also have to deal with the impacts left by previous owners, whether it be a poor service history or damage caused by destructive driving habits.

Driving experience

It’s advised you take a test drive with any vehicle you’re thinking of buying, especially if you’re spending a significant amount on it. This is so you can get a true sense of the feeling behind the wheel and make sure it’s exactly what you’re after.

The driving experience is a big factor that will undoubtedly keep you coming back for more, whether it’s the rapid acceleration or a smooth ride you’re looking for. Test drive a few different makes and models to find your perfect car from both outside and within.
