Tips to stop distracted driving on the road

July 21, 2023 By Gauge Magazine

Distracted driving Distracted driving has become a significant concern on the roads, leading to a rise in accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

With the proliferation of smartphones, infotainment systems, and other digital distractions, drivers are more prone to taking their eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, and focus away from the task of driving.

However, by adopting responsible habits and following safety guidelines, we can collectively work towards eliminating distracted driving and making our roads safer for everyone. This article presents essential tips to stop distracted driving on the road.

Put Your Phone Away

One of the most significant sources of distractions while driving is the use of smartphones. If a driver sends a text and takes their eyes off the road, a car going 55 MPH can possibly drive the length of an entire football field. Focus on your surroundings and limit the amount of distractions in the cab of a vehicle.

Avoid the temptation to check messages, make calls, or browse social media while behind the wheel. Silence or switch your phone to “Do Not Disturb” mode to prevent notifications from causing distractions. If necessary, use a phone mount to keep your device out of reach and avoid touching it while driving.

Have Pre-Set Navigation and Music

Before hitting the road, set your navigation system to your destination and choose your playlist or radio station. Adjust mirrors, seats, and temperature controls before you start driving. Having everything set up before you begin your journey reduces the need to fiddle with settings while on the road.

Avoid Eating and Drinking While Driving

Eating and drinking while driving can be dangerous, as it diverts your attention from the road and can lead to spills or choking hazards. Whenever possible, take a break and eat in a safe area, such as a rest stop or parking lot.

Limit Passengers and Distractions

Having too many passengers in your car can create distractions, particularly if they are engaging in lively conversations or activities. Limit the number of passengers and set ground rules for quiet and focused behavior while driving.

Secure Pets and Children

If you’re traveling with pets or children, ensure they are safely secured in appropriate restraints or carriers. Unrestrained pets and children can be distracting and dangerous, increasing the risk of accidents.

Resist Multitasking

Driving demands your full attention, so avoid engaging in activities that divert your focus, such as grooming, applying makeup, or reading. Even seemingly simple tasks can take your eyes off the road long enough to cause an accident.

Pull Over for Emergencies

If you need to make a call, attend to an urgent matter, or deal with an unexpected situation, safely pull over to the side of the road or find a parking lot. Taking care of emergencies off the road will help you remain focused and prevent potential accidents.

Use Technology to Your Advantage

Although technology can contribute to distracted driving, it can also be used to prevent it. Some apps and features can automatically silence notifications or send automatic replies while you are driving. Utilize these tools to stay focused on the road.Distracted driving

Lead by Example

As a driver, you have a responsibility to set a positive example for others on the road. Avoid distracted driving habits and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Be vocal about the dangers of distracted driving and its potential consequences.

Distracted Driving Is a Serious Threat To Road Safety

Distracted driving poses a serious threat to road safety, but by adopting responsible habits and adhering to safety guidelines, we can significantly reduce its occurrence.

Eliminating distractions while driving not only protects your life and the lives of others on the road but also ensures a safer and more enjoyable driving experience for all.

Remember that no text, call, or notification is worth jeopardizing your safety and that of others. Stay focused, stay attentive, and commit to making our roads distraction-free for a safer driving environment.
