5 Adblue or DEF Problems You Might Encounter and How to Fix Them

July 22, 2022 By Gauge Magazine

DEFAdblue problems OR DEF can be frustrating and costly. This blog post will discuss 5 of the most common Adblue problems and how to fix them. If you are experiencing any of these issues, don’t panic! We have the solutions you need to get your vehicle back on the road.

Low Adblue fluid levels – this can be fixed by adding more Adblue fluid.

If the Adblue or DEF fluid level gets too low, the emission reduction system will no longer be able to function properly. This can lead to an increase in emissions and may cause the vehicle to fail its MOT. The good news is that adding more Adblue or DEF fluid is relatively simple and can be done at home with a few basic tools. All you need is a funnel and a container of Adblue fluid. Once you’ve added the desired amount of Adblue fluid, be sure to dispose of any leftover fluid properly; it should not be poured down the drain or disposed of in the garbage. With a little care and attention, you can keep your diesel vehicle running cleanly and efficiently.

Adblue pump problems – these can often be fixed with simple cleaning or replacement

If your AdBlue pump isn’t working properly, there are a few things you can try before taking it to a mechanic. First, check that the pump is clean and free of debris. If it’s dirty, simply clean it with a brush or cloth. If the pump is clogged, you may need to replace the filter. If the problem persists, it’s likely that the pump itself is damaged and will need to be replaced. Fortunately, AdBlue or DEF pumps are relatively inexpensive and easy to find.

Electrical faults with the system – these may require professional help to fix

Adblue or DEF systems can occasionally run into electrical faults, which may require professional help to fix. The most common problem is a faulty sensor, which can cause the system to inject too much or too little solution into the exhaust gas. This can lead to a build-up of ammonia, which can damage the engine and reduce fuel efficiency. Other faults include a clogged nozzle and a faulty pump. These problems can usually be fixed by a qualified mechanic. However, if the problem is more serious, it may require the help of a specialist.

Problems with the SCR catalyst – can often be resolved by replacing the catalyst.

The SCR catalyst is a key component of the emissions control system on diesel engines. Its primary function is to reduce harmful NOx emissions by converting them into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. However, the SCR catalyst can also be a source of problems for diesel engine owners. One common issue is that the catalyst can become coated with soot, which reduces its ability to convert NOx. Another problem is that the catalyst can become plugged with ice, preventing the flow of exhaust gas through it. In most cases, these problems can be resolved by replacing the SCR catalyst.

Faulty or damaged sensors – in some cases, a new sensor may be required to restore the proper function of the system.

Sometimes sensors within the Adblue or DEF system can become damaged or faulty, causing problems with the way the system works. In some cases, a new sensor may be required to restore the proper function of the Adblue system. Thankfully, this is usually a relatively simple and straightforward process that can be carried out by a qualified mechanic. Once the replacement sensor has been fitted, the Adblue system should be back up and running as normal, ensuring that your vehicle remains compliant with emissions regulations.

While DEF is a necessary part of diesel engines, it can also cause some problems. We’ve outlined five of the most common AdBlue or DEF issues and how to fix them. If your car has any problems, they need to be fixed immediately and with high quality, because it causes your safety. That`s why all the details should be fixed or changed to new ones as soon as possible, for example shocks for 2014 ram 2500.  Hopefully, this will help you keep your engine running smoothly without any hiccups. Have you encountered any other problems with AdBlue?

Final Thoughts

While DEF is a necessary part of diesel engines, it can sometimes create issues if not maintained properly. That’s why investing in durable, high-performance parts is essential for keeping your truck reliable and safe. Upgrades like S&B Filters help protect your engine, improve airflow, and ensure your emissions systems continue to run smoothly without unnecessary breakdowns.
