What was the inspiration?
As a family we have owned several classic cars and we decided to keep only this one and to restore it to a very good condition. Love for classic cars, the knowledge for restoring, especially for Mercedes-Benz models was the biggest inspiration to buy and build this beauty.
How long did it take you to build?
As a family we own the car since 1983. The car is used almost as a daily driver and since it was both we are working on it.
How long have you been building?
The first restoration took up to 4 years. The second one lasted 1 year and the third (last one) lasted for 2 years.

Your future plans?
Driving the car as a daily until the next restoration. We don't consider the car as a monument or a sculpture in a museum, therefore we think we should drive it every day.
Vehicle history
Produced in Mercedes-Benz production plant in Mannheim, West Germany at 1953. The vehicle was imported to Yugoslavia on 6th of July 1953 and the first owner was the Parliament of Republic of Macedonia (Macedonia was one of the ex republics of Yugoslavia). In 1977 the vehicle was bought by a private owner and my father in 1983 become the second private owner of this vehicle. Since then the owner has not been changed.
Thanks to
Big thanks to many friends, car enthusiasts, professional mechanics, oldtimer associations and specially to my father and all the family member who supported the restoration of our beautiful car.

1953 Mercedes-Benz 170DS

1953 Mercedes-Benz 170DS

The 1953 Mercedes 170 DS That Proudly Decorates The Streets Of Macedonia!

History is best remembered for if we are currently looking at the remnants from it. If you are willing to take a sneak-peak of how the world looked like 66 years before now, there is no better example than this gorgeous Mercedes 170 DS. Classic cars can come in all shapes and sizes, but nothing can beat a good old German beast. Marko Bazerko, the current owner, inherited the car from his father, Trajko Bazerko, some years ago. However, the story of the Mercedes 170 DS that still proudly decorates the streets of Macedonia dates all the way back to 1953.

What makes this specific model so peculiar is that this was the last series which underwent production before WWII, 1936 to be precise, and it continued immediately after. Moreover, this was the first commercially available passenger car in the whole world with a diesel engine, a 1.8 diesel engine with 40 HP. It might not sound like much, but this was a revolutionary moment in the vehicle industry. However, the real question in the first place is, how and when did this beauty end up in Trajkoโ€™s hands?

Well, the story is far more interesting than you might expect. This Mercedes 170 DS was imported in Macedonia in 1953, immediately after rolling out of the German factory, for the needs of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia. After many years of proud use, the time left a great impact upon this car. It was in very bad condition when Trajko got the car back in 1978. Many doubted that this piece of metal is going to relive once again, but this man had a vision, a vision that one day this Mercedes 170 DS is going to look better than ever. And we are all quite sure that that day has certainly come.

However, it was not an easy path to walk for him. The suspension was all rusty, the engine made a strange noise and nearly every nut had to be replaced. Trajko gathered a team of three experienced automotive experts and hour after hour, day after day, the car was beginning to look like something quite different. Ever since, he has not stopped taking great care of it and the results can be easily seen nowadays.

With its remarkable design, the Mercedes never fails to grab the attention of pedestrians and drivers. But the best part about this car is that both Trajko, and currently Marko, daily drive this beauty. Yes, unlike most of the classic cars, this car is very reliable. With its flawless condition and the consumption of only 6 liters per 100 kilometers, why wouldnโ€™t anyone take this car as a daily drive. It is really difficult not to spot this white masterpiece when it is out there on the streets. Moreover, the Mercedes won many awards back in 2018 and we are sure that this trend is going to stay the same this year.

Being an extreme car fanatic himself, we are more than certain that Marko is going to continue to take great care of it and that we are going to see this Mercedes 170 DS out on the streets of Macedonia for many years to come. We have included an exclusive video of the Mercedes in action below!

Before you leave make sure to take a look at the first Mercedes Benz ever made!
