“Difficult Times”

2003 Toyota Tacoma owned by Chad Louque

This November 2024, custom truck fans are in for a treat with the unveiling of “Difficult Times,” Chad Louque’s stunningly rebuilt 2003 Toyota Tacoma. Inspired by iconic custom builds like Mike Alexander’s Blue Steel Tacoma and Oliver Porter’s masterpiece, Chad’s Tacoma is a testament to resilience, crafted during the challenging Covid period when parts and materials were scarce. With a build cost that scaled to $120,000 from an original investment of $3,000, this Tacoma is a jaw-dropping example of creativity, dedication, and expert craftsmanship.

A Build Born from Challenges

The build name, “Difficult Times,” reflects the obstacles Chad encountered in sourcing parts and materials amid the pandemic, turning each difficulty into a motivator to create something extraordinary. The truck, which originally began as a single cab, underwent two prior builds before becoming a full crew cab. Purchased from Mark Zarate, the crew cab was built from the frame up over 1.5 years, blending Chad’s 28 years of experience in the custom car scene with a bold vision for every detail.

Engine and Driveline Upgrades

Under the hood lies a factory 2RZ engine, enhanced with ported and polished intake manifolds and throttle body, a custom cold air intake, and a polished long-tube header by LC Engineering. With painted sheet metal panels, powder-coated pulleys, and polished billet accessories, the engine bay is a flawless mix of form and function. For the driveline, Chad installed a narrowed 1982 Toyota pickup axle, crafted with expert precision by himself.

Custom Chassis and Suspension

The chassis work is another highlight, featuring a stock floor body drop with modified OEM clips and custom removable crossmembers painted satin black. Airlift Dominator 2500 airbags, QA1 billet shocks, and a Pete and Jake’s triangulated 4-link complete the suspension system, providing the Tacoma with a perfect stance and responsive handling. The Bonspeed Huntington hand-engraved 20” wheels, paired with low-profile tires, add an extra touch of class.

Paint and Body Artistry

Painted in Leadfoot Gray with intricate graphics using Tamco candy and flake, the bodywork is a show-stopping blend of sleek aesthetics and custom detailing by The Assassin, Joel Cangiolosi. Chad collaborated with David Dekorver for the body mods, which include a sectioned and narrowed front bumper, shaved handles, and custom sheet metal bed panels. The cab corners, doors, and bed-to-cab gap were reworked with expert craftsmanship, giving the truck a seamless, OEM-like finish.

Interior Luxury and Sound System

Inside, “Difficult Times” is an oasis of luxury, featuring blue leather and suede upholstery by Stephen Frederick. The leather-wrapped dashboard, billet hand-engraved steering wheel, and custom console add refined touches, while a Kenwood Excelon double-DIN head unit paired with JL Audio amps and speakers ensures premium sound quality. Every inch of the interior exudes custom craftsmanship, from the white-face gauges to the CNC-machined shifter with an engraved NC logo.

Future Plans and Community Spirit

Looking ahead, Chad plans to add a big brake upgrade and a full sheet metal belly pan with graphics, keeping the build evolving. Proudly part of the Negative Camber Louisiana chapter, Chad’s work on “Difficult Times” wouldn’t have been possible without support from his family, friends, and fellow builders.
