“WAWAZAT”

1961 Plymouth Belvedere owned by Tony Netzel

For automotive enthusiasts who crave originality and bold design, Tony Netzelโ€™s 1961 Plymouth Belvedere, named “WAWAZAT,” is an iconic blend of nostalgia and creativity. Built over a 17-year period, this rare Pro Street Belvedere stands out with its charm and unique Snakeskin Green finish. Netzelโ€™s goal? To turn heads and prove that the unexpected can be extraordinary. Hereโ€™s an in-depth look at this one-of-a-kind build, crafted with passion, persistence, and a love for all things Mopar.

History and Inspiration

Tony acquired the 1961 Belvedere from a field in Adams, North Dakota, for just $300. Through years of dedication and investment, this Plymouth has evolved into a powerhouse with a build cost estimated between $30,000 and $40,000. The build draws from classic Pro Street styling, reminiscent of the magazine builds that captivated Tony in his youth. Affiliated with the Blown Mafia and known for his dedication to “Fat Tires and Blowers,” Tony isnโ€™t a newcomer to the car world. His past rides include a ’64 Dodge 440 with a Hemi and a ’69 Plymouth, showcasing his expertise and love for muscle cars.

Under the Hood: Engine and Performance

Underneath the hood, Tonyโ€™s Belvedere packs a Mopar engine with an impressive 493 cubic inches of displacement. Equipped with twin 64 mm Borg Warner turbos, rare long ram intake manifolds, Indy cylinder heads, and a 4.15 stroke crankshaft, the engine boasts power and precision. Holley 450cfm carburetors feed fuel to this beast, supported by an Aeromotive fuel pump and regulator for optimal performance. The MSD ignition system ensures reliable starts, while chrome and polished components provide a visual touch to match the engineโ€™s power.

Driveline and Chassis

A customized Art Morrison 2×4 air ride frame provides the foundation for WAWAZATโ€™s stability and stance. The Belvedere features a Ford 9-inch axle with 3.50 gears and a Mustang 2 front suspension with rack and pinion steering for controlled handling. The FTI 9.5โ€ torque converter enhances drivability, while four-link coil-over shocks in the rear provide balance and control, perfect for tackling long road trips and local car shows alike.

Wheels, Tires, and Stance

WAWAZAT rolls on 15×4 Weld Rodlite wheels up front and wider 15×14 wheels in the back, fitted with massive 33/22.5-15 tires. The front tires are slimmer, measuring 165/80-15, offering a striking contrast to the bold rear setup that embodies the classic Pro Street look. This setup not only enhances its road presence but also ensures that the carโ€™s power is grounded.

Paint and Bodywork

Finished in an eye-catching Snakeskin Green with a base/clear coat, the paint on WAWAZAT demands attention. Marky Mark, a key figure in the carโ€™s evolution, brought the vivid paint to life, giving the car a bold and memorable appearance. Bodywork modifications include shaved door handles and smoothed seams, preserving the original lines of the Plymouth while adding modern flair.

Interior: Classic Meets Custom

Inside, the car maintains its Plymouth heritage with a stock dashboard and sparkle steering wheel. The Auto Meter Phantom gauges keep the driver informed, while a Pioneer head unit and Alpine amplifier power the audio setup, ensuring that road trips sound as good as they look. The seats and door panels are custom-designed by Teaโ€™s Design, matching the roofโ€™s paint color for a cohesive interior that mirrors the carโ€™s exterior styling.

Future Plans and Road Ahead

Tonyโ€™s plans for WAWAZAT are straightforward: keep driving the wheels off it. In fact, heโ€™s already headed to California to join the Hot Rod Power Tour, continuing the legacy of this unique Belvedere on the open road. With every mile, Tony reinforces his commitment to showcasing the unusual and embracing the thrill of automotive expression.

Conclusion

WAWAZAT isnโ€™t just a 1961 Plymouth Belvedere; itโ€™s a statement of individuality and creativity. Tony Netzel has transformed a forgotten relic into an unforgettable Pro Street masterpiece, embodying the spirit of car culture and a commitment to personal vision. For those who appreciate the bold and unique, WAWAZAT is an inspiring reminder of whatโ€™s possible when passion and dedication drive the build.
