Customizing Your Car On The Cheap

January 25, 2022 By Gauge Magazine

Customizing Your CarCustomizing your car shouldn’t put you in a poor house.

You can customize your car and truck on a budget if you know-how. And unless you plan on having a show car, most people modify their cars more for the look and function than any other reason.

There are plenty of tricked-out cars and trucks on the road, from hot rods to racers and more. Often owners like to showcase their cars and trucks at shows, either professional or amateur get-togethers for car enthusiasts.

There are locations of car shows throughout the country, some just to show off the newest customized ride, but other times, car shows can be used as a benefit for charitable causes.

Such is the case at the Camp-N-Drag in Indiana. Hosted annually, the Camp-N-Drag is a fundraising event for various charitable organizations, and even in inclement weather, these events can raise substantial amounts.

There are two types of customized cars; the show car that is only for display and to be showcased at a car show, and the second one is the tricked-out customized cars that are also driven for everyday use.

Just like the Camp-N-Drag, there are a variety of ways people like to showcase their cars, from formal to casual. The most common types of events that showcase cars are:

  • Cruise and Cruise-In
  • Car Shows
  • Car Rally
  • Car Meet
  • Cars & Coffee
  • Poker Runs

Show Cars

Show cars are those that are typically in mint condition, sporting all original features, tires, and more. These types of cars ship in trailers, are washed and buffed, rolled onto stage or into a viewing area, and have rarely been driven.

A show car in other words, is a collectible that has barely been used in the manner of a typical car. By definition these pristine cars are designed and created to be shown and not sold or driven.

Tricked Out Cars

On the other hand, tricked-out cars are customized by individual owners who may use them on special occasions or even daily.

These cars and trucks may be souped-up, modified with factory changes, or tricked out once the owner purchases the vehicle.

Not every type of car is suited for customization, but minor upgrades are available for every make and model.

Some reasons that certain types of cars are more suitable to customization than others could be:

  • Engine-type
  • All-Wheel Drive
  • Performance
  • Classic Style
  • Superior Handling
  • Quick Acceleration
  • Stiff Suspension
  • Bumper Guards
  • Lift Kits

How To Customize Your Car On A Budget

When you think about customizing your car, you should consider more than just the type of customization you want; you should consider the area you live, the kind of driving you’ll be doing, and the possible “resale” value of your customization.

You can drastically change your car, from the engine, suspension, and performance, to making more cosmetic changes in your car’s appearance.

Modifying your ride, making it showroom quality, or simply changing it for specific needs shouldn’t cost you a ton of money. Likewise, you can upgrade and update your car with cheap upgrades that won’t cost a ton if you know how.

Simple things such as washing and waxing your car can keep the paint and shine of your car looking brand new without costing a ton.

Continuing with the exterior, wraps can add flare to your ride, personalizing the exterior of your car showing off your personality simultaneously.

Adding little things such as a car bra accentuating the performance-type vehicle, adding wheel covers on a jeep, or Subaru Outback seats that make your cloth seats look brand new are all easy ways to improve the look of your car.

For more than cosmetic looks, adding a spoiler to certain types of performance vehicles can give the look of a high-performing car without costing you too much.

You’d be better served using a spoiler that is held in place by adhesives rather than drilling, especially if you plan on selling your car sometime in the future.

For off-roading, you can add a lift kit, large, knobby tires, and runners that spice up the vehicle as well as provide essential safety features.

Except for the lift kits and tires, none of these upgrades should cost you very much but can make a massive difference in the appearance of your car.

Whether you’re a daily driver or looking to have a flashy car on the weekends, knowing how to modify and customize your car on a budget shouldn’t be too complicated.
