Some dream builds take years to complete. Others take decades to truly come to life.
For Carl Herzog, owning a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro had been a lifelong goal. Like countless gearheads growing up during the golden era of American muscle cars, Carl always dreamed of parking a first-generation Camaro in his garage. When the opportunity finally presented itself, he could have purchased a completed build and called it a day. Instead, he chose a different pathโcreating the exact Camaro he had envisioned for years.
The result is DSTROYR, a stunning 1969 Chevrolet Camaro restomod that combines classic muscle car styling with modern engineering, cutting-edge technology, and show-quality craftsmanship. Finished in an aggressive Destroyer Gray-inspired theme and powered by a monstrous 427 cubic-inch V8, this Camaro was built to dominate both the street and the show field.
A Dream Decades in the Making
Carl’s inspiration for the build was simple.
“I’ve wanted a ’69 Camaro since I was a teenager.”
Initially, he considered purchasing a more traditional completed Camaro build. However, after exploring his options, Carl realized he wanted something more personal.
“I ultimately decided to have a restomod built the way I wanted it.”
Starting with a Camaro that was only in the early stages of restoration, Carl and his team transformed the project into a modernized muscle machine that retains the iconic lines of the original while incorporating contemporary performance and luxury throughout.
Over the course of three years, the Camaro evolved into one of the most impressive restomod builds you’ll find anywhere.
Modern Muscle with a 427 Heart
At the core ofย the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro restomod sits a powerplant that perfectly matches the car’s aggressive appearance.
Under the hood is a 2022-based V8 that has been bored and stroked to a massive 427 cubic inches by the experts at Borowski Race Engines.
The combination delivers serious horsepower while maintaining the reliability expected from a modern performance build.
Additional engine upgrades include:
- Billet CVF pulley system
- Custom engine detailing
- Modern electronic controls
- Performance-oriented tuning
The engine compartment is every bit as impressive as the rest of the vehicle, showcasing clean craftsmanship, meticulous wiring, and a level of detail that rewards close inspection.
The name “DSTROYR” isn’t just for show. With a 427 cubic-inch V8 under the hood, this Camaro has the muscle to back up its intimidating appearance.
Roadster Shop Foundation
Building a world-class restomod starts with a world-class chassis.
DSTROYR rides on a Roadster Shop chassis specifically engineered for the 1969 Camaro platform. The setup dramatically improves handling, ride quality, and overall performance compared to the original factory suspension.
Highlights include:
- Roadster Shop chassis
- Fast Track Independent Rear Suspension
- Fox performance shocks
- Coil-over suspension system
- Independent rear suspension
- Four-inch lowered stance
This modern suspension package allows the Camaro to perform like a contemporary sports car while maintaining the timeless styling enthusiasts love.
Whether carving corners or cruising down the highway, DSTROYR was built to be driven.
One-Off Bodywork with Modern Styling
While the Camaro’s iconic silhouette remains instantly recognizable, nearly every panel has been refined or modified to create a cleaner, more aggressive appearance.
The bodywork completed by Ryan Ohmes incorporates numerous custom touches throughout the vehicle.
Exterior modifications include:
- Highly modified extended cowl hood
- Smoothed hood underside
- Alumicraft CNC billet grille
- Custom fabricated front and rear bumpers
- Custom fabricated rear spoiler
- Custom ground effects package
- Flush Auto City Classic glass
- Shaved drip rails
- Full belly pan underside treatment
Each modification was carefully designed to modernize the Camaro without sacrificing the character that made the 1969 model one of the most desirable muscle cars ever produced.
The result is a vehicle that looks both familiar and completely unique at the same time.
Massive Boze Wheels Fill the Fenders
The aggressive stance of DSTROYR is enhanced by a custom wheel and tire package that perfectly complements the Camaro’s muscular proportions.
The car rides on custom Boze wheels measuring:
Front: 19×9 Rear: 20×12
Wrapped in Toyo performance tires sized:
Front: 275/30R19 Rear: 345/30R20
The massive rear tires provide serious traction while creating the wide, planted appearance expected from a modern pro-touring build.
Combined with the lowered Roadster Shop chassis, the wheel package gives DSTROYR an unmistakable presence whether it’s parked or moving.
Custom Interior Built to Match
Open the door and it becomes immediately clear that the attention to detail extends far beyond the exterior.
The interior was built by The Custom Shop in Flanagan, Illinois and features a stunning combination of orange and gray Apex leather throughout the cabin.
Premium features include:
- Apex leather-wrapped dashboard
- Dakota Digital gauges
- Billet Specialties steering wheel
- Custom fabricated center console
- TMI seats recovered in Apex leather
- Custom fabricated aluminum trunk panels
- Custom floating headrest design
- Full roll cage integration
- XK Glow LED accents throughout
The custom door panels on the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro restomod incorporate fabricated inserts illuminated by XK Glow lighting, creating a modern appearance that complements the Camaro’s restomod theme.
Every detail was carefully considered, resulting in an interior that feels equal parts muscle car, luxury vehicle, and showpiece.
Modern Audio and Technology
DSTROYR doesn’t rely solely on horsepower to impress.
The Camaro features a complete Sony audio system designed to provide premium sound quality while maintaining a clean appearance.
The system includes:
- Sony XAV-8100 head unit
- Sony XM-5ES five-channel amplifier
- Sony XS-163ES component speakers
- Dual Sony XS-W102ES 10-inch subwoofers
- Custom Lexan and PVC enclosure
- Integrated XK Glow lighting
- Sony video system
The installation was completed by Mario Vietti and John Wargo of The Custom Shop and showcases the same attention to detail found throughout the rest of the vehicle.

The Next Dream Build
Most enthusiasts would be content after completing a vehicle like DSTROYR.
Not Carl.
His future plans already include building another restomod, this time centered around a 1979 Camaro.
But for now, he’s enjoying the fruits of three years of hard work and careful planning.
DSTROYR perfectly captures everything enthusiasts love about the modern restomod movement. It combines classic American muscle car styling with today’s technology, performance, and craftsmanship while remaining true to the spirit of the legendary 1969 Camaro.
For Carl Herzog, the dream Camaro he imagined as a teenager has finally become realityโand it was worth every minute of the wait.
