How to Properly Clean a Luxury Car

June 29, 2022 By Gauge Magazine

Luxury CarWhether you’re the type to take your luxury car to the professionals once a month to get it detailed and polished, or you prefer and enjoy cleaning it yourself, there will always be times when you have no choice because of an accidental coffee spill or nearby construction covered your car with dust or it will just be too long in general before you can get to the auto spa and you can’t leave your car dirty.

Whatever the reason, because, like most luxury vehicle owners, you treat your car right by keeping it in perfect working order, driving it responsibly and using luxury valet parking in Toronto when it’s available, you’re going to make sure to clean it properly with the care it deserves. Keeping a luxury vehicle clean is just as important as getting it serviced regularly. Cleaning the grime and dirt off your car protects the paint, bodywork and its resale value.

Keep reading to learn what you need to know to clean your luxury vehicle the right way.

Start By Inspecting Your Car

Before you begin, check the condition of your car, how much wax is left and whether you need to wax it again. If there’s enough of a wax coat left, a simple wash and dry will do.

You’ll also want to inspect the exterior for chips, peeling paint, scratches or any other issues that could get worse by washing and scrubbing.

Getting Prepared

It’s best to plan ahead and pick a day that’s not too hot or sunny. Ideally, you should be cleaning your car in a cool shaded area, just not under a tree.

Planning ahead also gives you the time to get all the equipment you need, such as:

  • A wash mitt and/or microfiber cloths and sponges.
  • At least two buckets for washing and rinsing, separate buckets for the rims and tires is ideal.
  • Professional car wash soap.
  • A hose and a water supply.
  • Ammonia-free window cleaner.
  • A vacuum cleaner with several attachments
  • High-quality dedicated carpet shampoo.
  • The premium leather cleaner recommended by your car’s manufacturer.
  • Dual-action polisher and professional wax and polish if needed.

Cleaning Your Car

It’s best to start with the interior by removing everything that isn’t attached to it and lock your doors, then clean your car from top to bottom. It’s important to rinse your car thoroughly before you start washing it to get rid of loose dirt and debris that could scratch your paint if scrubbed with a sponge.

When soaping and drying your vehicle, don’t move the sponge or chamois in a circular pattern as this can scratch the paint and cause swirl marks. Instead, move the sponge lengthwise across the hood and other exterior body panels.

Clean your rims and tires last using a different sponge and buckets. Also, if you drop a sponge on the ground, do not use it again until it’s been thoroughly rinsed.

When you’re done washing and rinsing, you must hand dry your car immediately and completely with a microfiber rag or chamois to prevent water drop stains. If your car doesn’t need a polish and seal, you’re done!
