5 Ways To Make Your Garage Eco-Friendly

February 22, 2022 By Gauge Magazine

Garage Eco-FriendlyA growing number of people realize that human activity negatively influences the environment. People’s views toward environmental protection have shifted due to alarming facts, such as the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.  With climate change and increased social responsibility for the environment, it has become more necessary to make eco-friendly decisions wherever feasible. Moreover, while most people embrace sustainability in their homes, the garage is sometimes overlooked as an area for eco-friendly changes.

Sustainable modifications, such as building Eco-friendly garages and carports, may help you save money while also increasing the property’s price. Here are a few ways to make your garage more environmentally friendly:

  • Make Sure You Insulate

Insulation should be your priority. Temperatures in garages may fluctuate greatly depending on the season, making them either the hottest or coldest space in the property.

When the weather becomes too hot, air-conditioning equipment or fans are needed to cool down the area. This may be avoided with proper insulation. On the other hand, the home will be filled with frigid air in the cold season, requiring you to spend more money on heating.

If you choose to insulate, you may establish an efficient barrier to the weather, which will ultimately save you money. However, insulating a garage is not synonymous with insulating a house. Moreover, it’s not only the inner walls that need to be insulated. There are several more locations to consider. Here are some areas of the garage that need to be insulated:

  • Door

The biggest entryway to your house is found in the garage. Hence, improper insulation may significantly impact heat loss and heat gain in a building.

Moreover, make sure your internal door is completely sealed. A well-sealed and insulated indoor door is essential even if it isn’t immediately exposed to the elements outside. To insulate your door and minimize the requirement for additional heating or cooling, install a draught excluder all around your door’s frame.

  • Wall

Internal heat escapes through cracks and exterior damage, allowing for the entry of cold air from the outside. So, caulk any apparent gaps and use drywall in places with significant damage. Additionally, cover any deteriorated areas with eco-friendly, waterproof cement.

  • Window

Insulation will also be compromised if you don’t seal the frames of your windows. As a result, you’ll have to spend more resources to maintain a pleasant temperature in your house. Moreover, insulation is assigned an R-value based on its insulating ability. A higher R-value indicates that the structure is more insulated.

Consider insulation made of wool, aerogel, or polystyrene because these products are renewable and have a low effect on the planet. They also have a high R-value, which helps reduce your environmental impact to a minimum.

  • Update Your Lighting

The lighting you choose for your garage may significantly impact both your energy costs and the environmental impact of your house.

While you may believe that a carport does not require windows, adding them may ultimately make your garage eco-friendly. Natural light from windows allows you to use less electric lighting throughout the day. Additionally, they assist in warming up your carport on clear winter days.

In addition, it’s essential to keep in mind that utilizing energy-efficient light bulbs at night, like a compact fluorescent lamp (CFLs) or light-emitting diode (LEDs), may significantly reduce your home electricity expenditure. Moreover, LED bulbs are often preferred since they are brighter, lasting, and more resistant to freezing temperatures.

  • Install Solar Panels

Installing solar panels on your roof is a great way to help the environment while saving money. These panels employ specialized cells to turn the direct sunlight into electricity, which may subsequently be used to run electricity in your house.

Due to the sun’s unending electricity supply, installing solar panels may result in substantial financial savings. They may be initially costly to install, but they may be quite cost-effective. Any extra energy that is not used may be stored in batteries for later use.

  •  Install Rainwater Collection System

While the planet has about 1,386 million cubic kilometers of water, barely 1% of this is easily accessible for human consumption. Water pollution and mismanagement are massive global problems that demand innovative and efficient solutions.

Adding a rainwater collection device on your carport roof is an option to consider. This enables you to collect water for later use. You may use the water to clean your vehicle, maintain your plants, or wash your patio.

  • Add A Living Roof

Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have risen to their greatest level in 2.5 million years. So, if you have a lot of space in your garage, a living roof or green roof might be an excellent method to help the environment and reduce air pollution in your neighborhood.

Final Thoughts

If you want to create positive change, you should start by examining your current living conditions and making changes as necessary. There is a slew of options available for enhancing the energy efficiency of your house. This includes making your garage more sustainable. By implementing sustainable improvements and establishing an environmentally friendly garage, you may save money and raise the value of your property.
