7 Smart Ways To Boost Your Car’s Fuel Efficiency

May 23, 2022 By Gauge Magazine

Fuel EfficiencyOwning a car isn’t a piece of cake. It isn’t something you own to brag about because of its make and model, but more on the convenience it brings to you and your family to avoid the hassle of everyday commuting. Besides the regular maintenance, you also have to consider the budget you have to set aside for fuel to power your car.

With global fuel prices rising constantly, you must be thinking of ways to get the most out of your car tank. Even though we can’t do anything about this hefty price, you can increase your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and save yourself some money.

Try following these fuel-saving tips and tricks to amp up your car’s fuel economy:

  • Reduce The Weight

Extra weight can significantly increase your car’s fuel consumption. The heavier a vehicle is, the more fuel it consumes. Check your vehicle for unnecessary weight, such as clutter or unused items.

Declutter your car and only bring those items you need for your trip. Remove roof racks, bike racks, or carriers if you won’t be using them.

  • Inflate The Tires Properly

Keeping your car’s tires properly inflated will improve your gas mileage and enhance safety. Besides, properly inflated tires wear evenly and can extend tread life.

Thus, inflate your tires when necessary. Under Inflated tires increase rolling resistance on the road, which will reduce your car’s fuel efficiency. Proper tire inflation also reduces wear and tear on the vehicle, so ensure you check your tire pressure and tire rotation according to your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

  • Drive At A Steady Speed

Driving at a constant speed increases the fuel efficiency of a car. Avoid accelerating and decelerating harder than you have to if you’re going to drive at a steady speed. Hard braking and acceleration will waste fuel and increase the time it takes for your car to reach its speed.

Maintaining a constant speed allows your car to run at a higher level with less effort. Meanwhile, maintaining a steady speed allows you to roll into stoplights or accelerate slowly without using the brakes. Moreover, you should avoid adding unnecessary cargo to your car’s roof, which will increase your car’s aerodynamic drag and waste fuel.

These changes may seem minor, but they can have a huge impact on your car’s fuel efficiency.

  • Keep Track Of Your Fuel Economy

A drop in your car’s fuel economy can also signal a more serious problem. So, track your car’s fuel consumption by checking the gauges on your dashboard, particularly the odometer and the fuel gauge. You should also ensure that all the gauges are working properly and get a replacement at Pro Speed Racing in case one of them stops working.

Most vehicles these days come with special gauges that allow real-time tracking of your car’s fuel economy to see how your driving style impacts your fuel efficiency.

  • Regular Car Servicing

Among all other ways, regular car service can increase the fuel efficiency of your vehicle. A car mechanic can check your car’s spark plugs, oil level, and filter to ensure that the engine is operating efficiently. When these components are maintained and cleaned properly, your car will run smoothly and efficiently, increasing miles per gallon. Have your car undergo regular servicing to save money on fuel as well.

  • Stop Idling

Idling is an inefficient use of fuel, particularly for larger vehicles such as trucks. Additionally, idling contributes to climate change and bad air quality, posing health risks for those affected.

Idling is a major drain on the engine, increasing the risk of engine wear and gas consumption. It affects your vehicle because when you put your car on idle, its engine is not operating at peak temperature. Hence, the fuel doesn’t combust well with an idle engine. As a result, it leaves residue behind that can cause damage to the vehicle’s exhaust system.

Thus, ensure you turn your engine off when you’re waiting or parked. Of course, you cannot avoid idling sometimes, but try to minimize it.

  • Use Gears Properly

If you want to get the most mileage out of your fuel and improve its efficiency, you must use gears properly. You should always use the right gear at the right time. Likewise, avoid over-revving your vehicle and ensure not to put too much stress on its engine by having a gear that’s too low for a particular speed or terrain.

Final Thoughts

Following all the tips discussed here can impact your car’s fuel consumption significantly and ultimately reduce your fuel expenses. Making a few changes to your driving habits and keeping your car in good running condition all the time can do a lot to boost its fuel efficiency.
