9 Effective Ways To Protect Your Car

September 4, 2018 By Gauge Magazine

protect your carYour car is probably one of your biggest investments and thus, it is very important that you ensure its safety at all times. Although some modern cars come with some basic security features, they usually tend to have some flaws that thieves can take advantage of to steal your car. The flaws of the security features are compounded by the bad habits of the car owner as well as the wiles of the criminals.

Therefore, the security of your car requires a holistic approach. Some of the ways you can deter car thieves include:

1. Keep Track of Your Car Keys at All Times

Your car keys are the biggest threat to your car security. Everyone with the key can access your car at will and thus, it is important that you guard them as you guard your house keys. In the same way that you cannot give a random person your house keys, you should also not give your car keys to anybody unless you fully trust that person.

2. Be Careful of Where You Park Your Car

Where you park your car can deter or encourage a thief. You should always park your car in well lit secure areas. If possible, you should park in areas with CCTV, gated entry and manned barriers.

3. Always Make Sure That Your Car Doors Are Locked at All Times

Whether you are stepping out to buy something from a store or to pick something you have forgotten in your home or office, always make sure that your car doors are locked unless it is attended. You should develop a habit of pulling your car handle before walking away to make sure that it is locked.

4. Always Keep Your Car Windows Rolled Up

Windows are usually the primary access points to your car and thus, keeping them rolled up helps to make your car more impenetrable.

5. Install Car Alarm Systems

A working alarm system is not only a deterrent mechanism but an extra layer of protection that will warn you or the general public that something is amiss.

6. Install Car Tracking Systems

Car tracking systems help to recover your car in case it is stolen by tracking its movement. Joining the Car Trackers Club is easy as you only need to purchase the tracking device, plug it in and log on to an app or a web platform to track your car. Although people install car tracking systems for security aspect, some top car trackers offer other helpful benefits such as fuel tracking, crash detection, tow detection, over speeding notification, unplug detection and jamming detection among others.

7. Keep Your Personal Documents and Valuables Hidden

You should avoid keeping your valuables and important personal documents in your car. Valuables can attract burglars and car thieves. If you happen to carry valuables and personal documents, you should not forget to take them with you when leaving your car.

8. Remain Vigilant at All Times

If you happen to be in an unfamiliar area, you should constantly study the area you want to park your car before leaving it unattended. Situational awareness is irreplaceable when it comes to ensuring the safety of your car.

9. Install Car Immobilizer

A car immobilizer prevents your car from being started by an unauthorized person.

Car thieves usually target cars through an immaculate planning or as an opportunity arises. As the car owner, it is your duty to ensure that you eliminate things that can make thieves target your car such as parking in unsecured areas or leaving the doors unlocked. It is also helpful to ensure that your car is insured against theft.
