Here’s What You Need to Do When Involved in a Motorcycle Accident

March 1, 2021 By Gauge Magazine

A motorcycle accident can leave you extremely traumatized. Shock and disorientation are very common, and while it might be difficult to make any moves after one, it’s important you have a safety plan in place in the case you’re involved in one. Here is a brief list of steps you should take immediately following a motorcycle accident.

Motorcycle Accident

Find Safety

An accident on a motorcycle can result in excruciating injuries to the point where thinking can be a challenge. Try to remember to always step away from the bike and other vehicles in case that something ignites and catches fire. Apply pressure to wounds to slow blood loss.

Injuries from an accident can diminish the quality of your life. That’s why it’s crucial to hire a lawyer if you’ve been injured in a motorcycle accident. A team of legal experts can ensure you will be compensated fairly and that the right person will be held liable.

Check That Everyone Is Okay

Quickly check to see what the damage is to everyone who was involved. You might find that there are people who need help getting out of the vehicle. It’s essential that everyone get out of their vehicles in case an explosion occurs. If the vehicles are in the middle of the road, see to it that everyone is able to safely move from the vehicle to the side of the road.

Call the Police

The other people in the accident might try to convince you to not call the police. Don’t listen. Call the police as soon as humanly possible. Alert them of any injuries that were sustained so that an ambulance can be sent over. Try to remain calm when speaking to the operator so that they can get all the information needed to get help to you as soon as possible. Keep it as short as possible and only provide the necessary details.

Don’t Take Off Safety Gear

You may be in shock after the accident, and seeing more injuries underneath your gear could cause you to panic. Panic would make your heart beat faster, and thus result in more blood loss. Your clothing might keep things from swelling as well. So, keep everything on until the ambulance arrives.

Stay Calm

Emotions will certainly be in shambles after a crash, but it’s essential to keep them in check. Avoid placing blame or targeting anyone with aggression—-this could make a bad situation even worse. In fact, avoid communicating with the other party except to make sure they’re okay and to get their contact information. Wait for the police and your lawyer to arrive before trying to discuss the accident with the other party.

Don’t Leave the Scene

Remain on the scene of the accident until the authorities arrive. Try to make sure that the others involved also do not leave, as their vehicles, injuries, and testimonies are compulsory in determining fault. If they leave, then it will only drag out the process of you getting compensated for injuries and damages to your bike.

Take a Ton of Pictures

Take as many pictures as you can. These will serve as evidence for determining fault and holding the responsible party liable. You may not know what to take pictures of, so that’s why it’s a good idea to call your lawyer to the scene. If that’s not possible, then take pictures of the damages, the surrounding area, injuries, and anything else you might need to remember about the accident later.

Preserve Evidence

You might be tempted to repair all the damages on your bike after the wreck or to just get rid of it. Although it might hold a terrible memory at the sight of it, you need to hang on to it. It could be a defining piece of evidence for your case.

Remember that even though you might hate looking at them, you’ll need to keep pictures of the wreck and your injuries. These will also function as evidence.

Get Contact Information of Those Involved

Make sure that you get all the contact information, including the tag numbers, of all the people involved. This might be awkward after a car accident, but it’s imperative to ensure that they can be contacted by your insurance company and lawyer. If not, then you risk having to pay for all the damages and injuries sustained in the accident.

If you can remember these basic guidelines, then you’ll be safer if you wind up in an accident. Always remember to call the authorities as soon as possible and try to make sure no one leaves the scene before they arrive.
