“SPIKE”

1946 Ford Truck

Owned by: Joe Stallsworth

Photos by: John Mumaw

The April 2026 issue features a standout build that’s been turning heads in the car scene—SPIKE, a 1946 Ford rat rod that’s part lowrider, part custom truck, and 100% unique. With its aggressive spiked accents across the cab and chassis, SPIKE is more than a vehicle—it’s a rolling piece of art that’s been evolving over the years.

Originally purchased for just $300, this classic Ford has been transformed into a $16,000 showstopper with a look and feel that perfectly reflects its owner’s vision. The build took about a year and a half to reach its current form, but like many true custom cars, it’s still evolving, with future plans including a new engine and transmission setup along with more copper accents to enhance the one-of-a-kind aesthetic.

Under the hood, SPIKE packs a serious punch with a small-block Chevy V8 from the early ’90s. The 383 cubic-inch engine features a tunnel ram with dual Holley 450 carbs, a Thumper cam, open side pipes, and unique Olds Rocket valve covers paired with 155mm howitzer shell canisters used as intake stakes. The combination gives it an intimidating yet stylish presence, perfectly matching the spiked frame and custom bodywork.

The chassis is a custom 1 3/4-inch tube frame with numerous wild bends and spikes, paired with 1948 Ford spindles on a suicide front end. The truck sits slammed on a single center leaf in front and a simple air ride in the rear, creating a stance that’s aggressive yet purposeful. Front steelies and rear Firestone cheater slicks complete the raw, retro look, while the green and rust-cleared paint is accented with old-school pinstripes and custom-painted door rockers.

Inside, the cabin blends vintage and modern touches. A 1946 Ford dash with Stewart Warner gauges anchors the cockpit, while steel bucket seats with cowhide padding, a custom sheet metal console, and an aftermarket steering wheel tie the look together. Audio and video upgrades bring a modern touch to the otherwise classic interior.

SPIKE isn’t just a build—it’s a statement. From its chopped and channeled body to the smallest custom details, it reflects a passion for trucks, lowriders, and creative craftsmanship that will continue to evolve for years to come.
