Hit on I-35 or 635? Here’s What to Do After a Dallas Car Accident

September 11, 2025 By Gauge Magazine

Texas recorded 664 fatal interstate crashes in 2023. Dallas highways like Interstate 35 and I-635 (LBJ Freeway) are notorious for heavy traffic and, unfortunately, frequent car accidents. In 2024 alone, Dallas saw over 26,109 collisions, many on the I-35 and other major routes, resulting in thousands of injuries and hundreds of fatalities. Knowing what to do in the chaotic moments after a crash can protect your safety, your health, and your legal rights.

Prioritize Safety Above All Else

The absolute first step after any car accident is to assess the situation for injuries. Check yourself and your passengers. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately to request medical assistance.

Texas sees 682,000 hit and run accidents each year. Remember, in Texas, the driver must, by law, stay at the scene of an accident. Leaving the scene could lead to criminal charges.

Report the Accident

In Texas, you are required to report an accident to the police if it results in injury, death, or apparent vehicle damage of $1,000 or more. If police do not come to the scene for a minor accident, you must file a crash report with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) within 10 days.

Exchange Information and Document the Scene

Texas law requires you to exchange certain information with other drivers involved in the accident. This includes:

  • Name and address
  • Driver’s license number (if requested)
  • Vehicle registration information
  • Insurance company and policy number

Be sure to get the same information from all other drivers. Also, gather contact information from any witnesses at the scene.

Seek Medical Attention Promptly

It is crucial to seek medical attention as soon as possible after a car accident, even if you don’t think you’re injured or your injuries seem minor.

If you delay seeking treatment, an insurance company might argue that your injuries aren’t related to the crash or aren’t as severe as you claim. Texas law requires hospitals to provide emergency care regardless of your ability to pay. Options like Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage on your auto insurance, medical liens, or free/low-cost clinics can also help manage medical expenses.

Notify Your Insurance Company

Report the accident to your own insurance company as soon as possible, regardless of who you believe was at fault. Most policies require prompt notification. Provide them with the facts of the accident. However, be cautious about speaking to the other driver’s insurance company without first consulting with a car accident attorney. Their adjusters may try to get you to make statements that could harm your claim.

Consider Consulting a Car Accident Attorney

Especially if you’ve been injured, your vehicle has significant damage, or there are disputes about fault, consider contacting a Dallas car accident lawyer. A Dallas car accident attorney can explain your legal rights and options, investigate the crash, gather evidence, and negotiate with insurance companies on your behalf. They can help ensure you receive fair compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, and pain and suffering. Remember, in Texas, you generally have two years from the date of the accident to file a personal injury lawsuit.

Navigating the aftermath of a car accident on a busy Dallas highway can be overwhelming. By following these steps, you can protect your well-being and your legal interests.
