Car LED Lighting – What are the Different Types?

April 29, 2021 By Gauge Magazine

light-emitting diodes LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, are really big news on the home market – but what about when it comes to cars and other vehicles? While you might already have an LED or two in your home, did you know that you can now install them as part of your car’s onboard lighting, too?

LED lights are extremely popular with motorists thanks to how much energy they actively save. It’s thought that switching from basic halogen over to LED for your vehicle lighting might save you up to 85% in excess energy. That’s a lot of power kept for other essential features of your car!

As you might expect, there are plenty of different LEDs or light-emitting diodes out there, as well as many different manufacturers. You may well have come across brands such as Vision-X and Baja, for example, who are well known for bringing innovative energy-saving bulbs to the motoring market.

If you’re completely new to the idea of setting up LEDs in your car, we’re here to help. Let’s take a look at which LEDs will work best for your car, and what the differences are between them.light-emitting diodes

Where Can You Use LEDs in Your Car?

Ultimately, if there is a halogen bulb in your car, there’s a very good chance you can swap it out for an energy-efficient, LED alternative. While they are smaller than halogens for the most part, they offer just as much light at a fraction of the power and price.

What’s more, you can set up LEDs or light-emitting diodes for your vehicle in an array of colours and wattages. Many engineheads love kitting out their cars with creative LED choices, meaning setting up these bulbs could help you add a little more personality to your ride.

Here are just a few areas where you might want to use LEDs in your car or pickup:

  • On the roof
  • On the bed (for pickups)
  • On the tail
  • As tail lights
  • As ditch lights
  • As fog lights

Of course, this is only scratching the surface. There are some great looking custom lighting rigs out there, and we highly recommend you go for the bespoke touch. Of course, you can set up LED rigs that are ‘out of the box’, but part of the fun in modifying your vehicle is for the customization – surely!

LEDs are great not only for completing a custom look, but also for genuinely supporting you on the road. They make fantastic fog lights, for example, as well as helping you to alert other motorists.

LED Customization Potential

As mentioned, one of the first things you might want to look into when it comes to car and pickup LEDs is, of course, the different colors available. Some will even cycle through a whole spectrum if you’d like them to! Some flash blue, some emit red – they really can help to dress up even the homeliest of pickups.

What’s more, you can really accessorize with LEDs. You can use them to give off flashy, glitzy colorscapes, or you can use them to give off a brilliant glow – the choice really is yours, and again, you can set them up across your vehicle pretty much anywhere you like.

Custom LED or light-emitting diodes rigs will help you to smarten up your pickup or saloon and will even help you to keep the roads you drive down as safe as possible.light-emitting diodes

Why Else Should You Invest in LEDs?

LEDs are superb for instant, intense heat. As all pickup owners will know, halogen can take some time to get up to full beam, especially when bulbs are showing their age. LEDs offer an almost instant glow.

What’s more, LEDs are fantastic value. While halogen lamps are cheap enough, LEDs offer more value, dollar for dollar, over the long term.

However, do keep in mind that you’ll need to invest in an LED that’s legal for road use. Sadly, there are a few LED systems out there that aren’t actually legal for you to drive around with, so it makes sense to buy from a licensed provider.

Otherwise, go wild with LEDs! Make sure to check out local road laws before you buy, but otherwise, you’re good to go when it comes to really maxing out your lighting customization.
